     "text": "Months before Stuttgart, a Japanese philosopher of aesthetics got there first in print. Hiroshi Kawano (1925–2012) had read Max Bense's information aesthetics and decided theory had to be tested on a real machine: in September 1964 he published designs calculated on an OKITAC 5090A at the University of Tokyo — arguably the earliest published computer-generated artworks anywhere. A second-order Markov chain decided the color state of each cell in a mosaic grid; the computer printed the pattern in black and white, and Kawano applied the gouache by hand, cell by cell. He stayed an outsider to the Western canon for decades, until ZKM in Karlsruhe acquired his archive in 2010 and restored Tokyo to the founding story, beside Stuttgart and New Jersey.",

     "text": "In February 1965 a Siemens mathematician named Georg Nees hung machine-drawn graphics in the Studiengalerie of the TH Stuttgart — the first exhibition anywhere of art from a digital computer. Philosopher Max Bense defended the work to skeptical painters by coining a phrase: 'künstliche Kunst', artificial art. That November, mathematics student Frieder Nake — who had written the plotter's drawing software as a student — exhibited beside Nees, and made the era's icon: Hommage à Paul Klee, an algorithm improvising inside Klee's grammar, with random variables written in so the machine chose within the rules. Nees's Schotter (1968) is the whole argument in one picture: twelve columns of squares holding rigid order at the top and tumbling into chaos at the bottom as a random variable grows.",
